Year one

Juli 2017 - Juli 2018

Year in one word: exploration

Most important insight: most behavior of myself and others is context dependent

Most important skill gained: consciously combining insights from theory with real life experiences to form an opinion.

Organizational

culture

Practice

  • I worked simultaniously at Operation Education, a foundation aiming to transform the education system and Thomas and Charles, a project agency focussed on learning. My mentor Annette Dölle helped me to compare the cultures of the aforementioned organizations. Furthermore, in our conversations we applied the theory from the books I read to the reality of my day to day work.

  • I played fly on the wall for a day at KIEN, a mental health care institution that works according the teal principles in Reinteving Organizations.

Teachers:

  • Annette Dölle

  • Yuri van Geest

  • Claire Boonstra

  • Fraukje Meulenbroek en Elbert-Jaap Schippers of KIEN

Change facilitation

Practice:

  • While I was working with Operation Education, we created a leadership program for principals and headmasters. This leadership program is based on Theory U.

  • I researched the development of professional identity at primary school de Lanteerne as part of a consulting project focussed on including the schools community in the day to day learning process of the students.

Teachers:

  • The Operation Education team, including Claire Boonstra, Nanda Carstens, Stef van Wickeren, Claudette Verpalen en Anais Besemer.

  • Jan Fasen of Agora.

  • Ivo Callens of the Centre for Generative Leadership.

  • Dave Jongeneelen en Michel Barth of Better Future

  • Hans Thissen, Ria Kocken en José Berndt of de Lanteerne

Entrepreneurship

Practice:

  • I started my own company in June 2017. In doing so, I felt like I was building my parachute not before, but in the middle of the free fall. I taught myself skills like doing VAT taxes, drawing up contracts, building websites, negotiating prices and much more all by trial and error.

Teachers:

  • Alette Baartmans of Thomas en Charles for teaching me that some things skills might seem complex, but actually are pretty simple if you take them step by step.

  • Lotte de Rooij of Thomas en Charles for asking me over and over: 'what's the research question Emma?'

  • Annette Dölle for guiding me in forming my own values and vision as an entrepreneur.

  • Betty Huerta for teaching me about social entrepreneurship.

  • Anne van Egmond for being a true ally in my discovery of the kind of company I want to run.
